Enabling Technologies: Superconductivity and Magnesium Diboride are keys for the E-Thrust concept

E-Thrust is the electrical distributed propulsion system concept for lower fuel consumption,

fewer emissions and less noise developed by EADS Innovation Works.

Superconductivity is mentioned as a key enabling technology for the hybrid/distributed propulsion concept:

the electrical power could be transferred and stored through lighter, more compact and efficient

superconducting cables and SMES to electrical generators based on the same technology.

The comparison between copper and superconducting wires made of Magnesium Diboride

(Columbus Superconductors) highlights the encumbrance and weight advantages of the latter.
